Sports
Sports is commonly defined by many people as any physical activity that involves some level of competitive competition, including basketball or netball. However, some sports may also involve participation in social competition or other non-sport activities. Most sports are considered a contact sport, where the players use their feet, hands, or even their bodies to make the contact. Many types of games and competitions are known as sports. An individual who competes in a sports competition is known as an athlete.
Sport terminology can be defined in many different ways. Some people call an individual who plays a contact sport as a player, while others will call a team of athletes that participate in a particular sport a team. The term professional sports refers to any type of athletic activity in which the athlete uses his/her feet, hands, or a body part such as a limb to compete. Sports may be competitive or non-competitive, depending on the activity. Professional sports often refer to any sport involving money; such as basketball, baseball, football, golf, wrestling, soccer, and track and field.
While the word “sport” covers a wide variety of physical activities, not all types of physical activity are considered sports. Many popular television shows, movies, and books are based on mind sports such as magic, puzzles, crossword puzzles, and card games. People may be entertained by the skill of guessing the age of someone over a period of time or solving a mathematical problem. Other examples of mind sports include mindreading (e.g., completing mazes or writing letters of the alphabet), card games, and musical chairs. If these activities are conducted with careful planning, technique, physical strength, and proper form, they are generally considered to be a sport.
