An Article About the Mentality of Professional Sports Coverage on Cable and Satellite TV

A sports drama is a movie genre which makes use of sports as the main theme of the movie. It’s a fictional production in which an individual, sporting event, team, or participant of particular sport are heavily involved, and that rely strongly on sport for their main plot resolution or motivation. It may take place on land, at sea or in the air, but almost always, they center on sports as the major theme. There have been many popular examples of sports movies over the years, ranging from the “Million Dollar Baby” trilogy to “iclean”, but it has been very rare for a movie to be both highly fictional (think George Bailey) and extremely true to its subject (think Lawrence Kasdan). The movie genre covers a wide range of subject matter, from baseball to motor racing, from thema to horror movies, from war action to comedy.

This article will look closely at one of the most successful ever sports movies of all time, “Olympus!” As with many of its contemporaries it’s based on real life events, but it strives to present them in an entertaining, dramatic way. The film follows two rival athletes, long-time professional wrestler Daniel Bryan (Robert Redford) and retired NFL defensive endocaster John Bon Jovi ( Len Cariou) as they attempt to win the gold medal for the US at the 1996 Olympics. These two men have formed a fast friendship over the years, and as the tension mounts between them both they find themselves face to face with a tragic and monumental clash of idealism and selfishness… The movie is very suspenseful and stylish, and expertly interweaves plot with character development without losing the focus on the larger themes of friendship and sportsmanship. It’s a great boxing film, and contains very strong acting performances from Redford, Bryan, and DiCenzo.

As part of my Sports Film Studies class, this was my favorite movie by far. Like the others I’ve reviewed, this film had excellent visual quality and powerful storytelling, but like many of my other favorites it was missing one important element. The one thing that made this movie much more than just another sports film was the inclusion of significant sports content. Unlike most of the other options available on cable or satellite TV, there wasn’t a great deal of sports information included in the main article. The section needs to be addressed by the cable or satellite providers if they want to provide viewers with a complete picture of world cup events.
