Different Definitions of Health
The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete well-being free from illness or infirmity.” Different definitions of health have been used throughout the years. For example, the phrase “in good health” may refer to a person who does not smoke. However, other definitions of health exist. Below are some of the more common ones. Depending on your purpose, a single definition can apply to multiple people. The following list may not be exhaustive.
A recent study found that only a small percentage of American adults are in good physical health. In fact, only 17% of U.S. adults are considered healthy, according to the World Health Organization. This is a very low percentage. The World Bank estimates that almost one-fifth of Americans are in poor physical health. A higher rate of disease is associated with higher risk of death and fewer life years. Although this may be true for many people, it can also be true for children.
When it comes to health, there are several different definitions. The first is the definition that WHO established in 1948. While this definition is still relevant, it is no longer the only one. A third definition of health involves individuals and scales of value. A high-valued definition of health will encourage people to take preventive measures and seek medical treatment. In other words, it is about more than just a lack of illness. That is why the definition of health needs to be expanded.
