Health – An Introduction
Health is a condition where disease and infirmity are not present. Various definitions have also been used over the years for different purposes. Modern medicine has evolved so much that its practice incorporates other techniques such as counseling and psychotherapy. In addition, people suffering from ill health tend to get stressed by the perceived limitations on their medical choices.
This is because humans are inherently social creatures who look out for those who fall in their group. Disease is considered a threat to social standing and thus, causes people to react emotionally. In essence, health science seeks to understand why we do not become ill but remain healthy in other ways. By studying the way diseases occur, studying the interaction of cells and mind/body mechanisms, studying the physical and mental aspects of health and studying the impact of aging and diseases, the scientists are slowly coming up with theories on how to achieve better health and live longer lives.
Most health conditions are the result of a combination of factors such as genes, lifestyle, environment and emotions. Therefore, prevention is better than cure. It is necessary to identify the risk factors for ailments and learn ways to minimize the effect of such factors. This is usually done through proper dieting, regular exercise, quitting smoking and other tobacco use, getting enough sleep and eating less fat and sugar. In addition, it is important to know your personal risk factors and be aware of situations that can put you at risk. Avoiding such risks can greatly improve your lifestyle and lead to a longer life.
