Health, according to the World Health Organization,is “a state of full physical, mental and social health and not just the absence of illness and infirmity.” Different definitions have been applied over the years for different purposes. A health state is influenced by a person’s attitudes and beliefs about his or her health, as well as their family’s and community’s views on the matter.
An important part of health policy is risk management and making sure that public health programs are both effective and affordable. Much of this is done through screening for common diseases and screenings for potential genetic diseases. Many other types of preventive measures are also undertaken. These include vaccination against common diseases, promoting healthy food choices and exercise. Some newer ways to keep people healthy include complementary therapies, homeopathy, alternative medicine, vitamin and mineral supplements, and cancer prevention and control.
Health promotion means promoting good health, but this is not always a simple matter. Many individuals and communities work towards the same goals, but face many obstacles in getting their way. Health information policies have been established to disseminate accurate and up-to-date facts on a wide range of health matters. Community awareness programmes help to reduce disease burden and prevent serious disease outcomes. The best way to promote good health is to be proactive and take preventive measures, while maintaining the right balance between cures and prevention.
