Popular Video Game Themes
There are several different kinds of games, which tend to be grouped together by their objectives or characteristics not necessarily by their nature or type of play. Game categories or niches, then, may have several subgenres, each revolving around a particular theme or idea of what video games are about. We’ll discuss some of the most popular video game themes here.
Some of the earliest games to be developed commercially included Chess, Hangman, Checkers, and Risk. These games required players to make use of several different kinds of tools to “play” the game, such as checkers for playing pawns, jokers for bluffing opponents, etc., and required careful consideration of how various tools used in these strategies could affect one another. Today, many of the main categories of games include Chess, Monopoly, Risk, and Scrabble, although other variants of these themes are continually being developed and introduced. The main article continues below this point, discussing in more detail the different types of tools that players can use in different strategies in many of these popular board games.
While there are no dice games that were created specifically for gambling purposes, we’ll discuss games that require players to “roll the dice” or to “buy and roll” certain resources. This includes such games as Blackjack, Slots, Poker, and dominoes (for the unaware, dominoes actually represent pieces on a domino machine – the basic game is similar, but dominoes must be carefully rolled to stay on top of the counter, unlike most other gambling games). Other examples of dice games include mazes, word games, and skill games. For those curious as to how the dice in one of these games work, the main article has a thorough explanation of the mechanics behind them, both classic and modern, for your convenience!
