Health is a condition of mental, physical and social well being in which infirmity and disease are absent. Different definitions have also been employed for many different purposes over the years. According to popular perception, the term health is associated with being happy and peaceful. It thus implies that a person who is healthy is contented, happy and his or her life is enjoyable. Happiness is associated with personal achievements, while health is associated with the ability to live and work comfortably.
Mental health is related to the person’s ability to handle daily activities, while physical health is involved with being able to perform everyday physical tasks. The mental health care often gets a bad name, as people are quick to label or judge the worthy from the unworthy. However, proper education and awareness are the keys to improving this aspect of people’s lives. There are many organizations and institutions that are working diligently to educate the public on the advantages of mental health care and to provide effective resources to tackle these issues. For instance, the Mayo Clinic and the American Academy of Pediatrics have worked hard over the years to disseminate information about mental health issues and ways to address it in the family.
While there are different definitions of the term ‘well-being’, they all agree on the fact that it is a state that encourages and enables people to flourish through their natural abilities to live a happy, fulfilling and productive life. This can be achieved through an effective mix of mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Some basic elements of mental well-being include emotional health, mental health maintenance, physical health, and integrated whole-life wellness. The three aspects of mental health are: well-being, integration, and resilience.
